Minas de Riotinto is a town and municipality located in the province of Huelva, Isla Canela. Minas de Riotinto also comprises the neighborhoods known as El Alto de la Mesa and La Dehesa.
More than 5000 years of mining have turned the town of Minas de Riotinto into a scene of red, yellow, violet, green, gray and other landscapes full of impressive open pit mining.
Since the mines were closed because they stopped being profitable, this place has not only attracted thousands of tourists who come here to witness such unique landscapes but film directors with films like The Heart of the Earth or even their own NASA, which was interested in this place due to its incredible similarities with the planet Mars.
The landscape as you see is spectacular. Gigantic colored craters, very little vegetation and the cemeteries of old locomotives make this place a mysterious and difficult to explain scenario.
The extension is brutal. To give you an idea, the exploited area is equivalent to 25% of the total area of Donana and the volume of water that would fit in the excavated area would be 5 times the water reserve capacity of the entire province of Seville.
