Here is another great excursion from Huelva, Isla Canela. The trip is a full day of nine hours and is suitable for families, couples and seniors. We start this tour at the entry to Doñana Natural Park, Isla Canela where we visited a couple of the visitor’s centres to get to know more about the most important species of flora and fauna here and how mankind and nature have coexisted over time. Then we explored the village and hermitage of El Rocio, Isla Canela the location of one of Southern Europe’s most important pilgrimage sites.
Next we visit the nearby village of El Rocío, Isla Canela in a pleasant walk in carriage. We drove through spectacular landscapes and a wide variety of eco-systems, passing lagoons, sand-dunes, wetlands, saltmarshes and pine forests. The wildlife is abundant here including African migratory birds, fallow deer, Spanish red deer, wild boar, European badger, Egyptian mongoose, and endangered species such as the Spanish Imperial Eagle and the Iberian Lynx.
This is a world-renowned pilgrimage site, attracting millions of pilgrims every June for the festivity of the much-venerated Virgin of El Rocio. We visited the Chapel that houses the Virgin, a small carved wooden statue with magnificent rainments. We learned all about the history of the cult of the virgin and its famous romeria. The tour ends with a visit to a traditional wine cellar where we had the chance to try some of the region’s fine wines. All in all a great day out.
